Manchester United fans went wild after Alessia Russo scored a last minute winner against Arsenal in the Women’s Super League.

The star striker completed a shock comeback for the Red Devils, securing a 3-2 victory at the Emirates.

Manchester United had struck first through Ella Toone, but goals from Frida Manuum and Laura Wienroither gave Arsenal the lead in the second half.

The Gunners needed to see out just 15 minutes to maintain their unbeaten record this season, but Millie Turner and Russo had other ideas.

Turner first headed in a free-kick in the 85th minute, before Arsenal suffered another set-piece disaster right at the death.

Katie Zelem’s inch-perfect corner met the head of Russo, who guided the ball perfectly past the outstretched arms of Arsenal goalkeeper Manu Zinsberger.

She wheeled away in delight towards the celebrating away fans, who were located in a corner of the Emirates.

The party continued at the final whistle, when the Manchester United players came over to the away end to celebrate their victory.

The Red Devils are now level on points with Arsenal in the WSL table, with both teams on 18. Chelsea top the leaderboard with 21 points, but have played an additional game.

Are there normally away ends in the Women’s Super League?

Away ends are still a rarity in the WSL. In fact, Manchester United were originally not given an away end for their clash against Arsenal. It was only introduced following complaints from fans and pressure from Ian Wright.

As a result, home and away fans sit together for the majority of matches in the WSL. This can have an impact on the atmosphere at the game, with away fans unable to sing songs and chants as a group.

The away end during Arsenal’s match Manchester United massively enhanced the atmosphere, and made the final 15 minutes of the match incredibly exciting. It was proof that away ends should be an option for every fan attending a WSL game.
