In an interview with Téléfoot, Malo Gusto and Castello Lukeba discussed their happiness about being called up to the France squad for the first time and the opportunity of being able to play together for club and country. After several injuries ahead of the international break, Castello Lukeba and Malo Gusto found themselves as beneficiaries as they received their first Les Bleus call-ups to replace Dayot Upamecano and Axel Disasi respectively.

The Lyon academy graduates have played together from a young age and were asked by Téléfoot about what it would mean to be able to play together for France. Lukeba replied, “We are very happy we had the opportunity to play together at our training club (Lyon) and now to be able to play together in the French team. I hope it happens but to already be called up is something”.

The pair also played together regularly for Les Bleuets but never for Les Bleus. Gusto revealed the story of how he found out Lukeba was called up for the first time: “After the first training on Monday afternoon, I was going back to the castle but I saw someone arriving from afar at Clairefontaine with all of their belongings but I didn’t know who it was. I saw it was Castello and I asked what are you doing with your belongings like that and he said I’ve been selected so I’ll be joining you. I thought it was a joke but he seemed serious so it was a pleasure to know he’d be with me”.

Malo Gusto made his France debut in Les Bleus’ 2-1 victory against The Netherlands as he replaced the returning Jonathan Clauss as a second-half substitute. Lukeba was an unused substitute for the match. However, both could get the opportunity to feature in Les Bleus’ upcoming friendly against Scotland on Tuesday.
