Liverpool and Argentina star Alexis Mac Allister stirred controversy with his statements on the show La Casa Del Kun on ESPN, where he analysed the chances of South American clubs against European teams in the 2025 Club World Cup.
He said, "For me, South American teams can compete in one or two matches, but in the long run, as of today, they don't stand a chance against the Europeans."
"They match up with passion, desire, tackles and all that, but ultimately, you don't win with just that," stated the midfielder.
Mac Allister, who has firsthand experience in both contexts after his time with Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, and now in the Premier League, highlighted the intensity and heart of South American teams but emphasised differences in resources, tactical discipline, and quality as key factors.
The Argentine's comments have sparked mixed reactions. While some South American fans defend the grit and history of their clubs, others acknowledge the economic and structural gap with Europe.
