Lyon had won three and drawn one of their opening four games without truly convincing at any point, while they have a game in hand to come at FC Lorient in midweek. Here they produced their best performance of the campaign so far, albeit against a limited Angers side whose coach Gérald Baticle must be under serious pressure now.

Facing his old club, Karl Toko-Ekambi got the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark with a fine left-foot strike across the goalkeeper and into the net off the far post. Lacazette then made it 2-0 seven minutes before the interval, the former Arsenal man heading home from a Malo Gusto cross.

Any chances of an Angers comeback in the second half were soon put to bed as Toko-Ekambi scored his second goal and Lyon’s third just before the hour mark. The Cameroon forward was on hand to finish at the back post after a Gusto cross from the right was deflected into his path.

Yet OL were not finished there, with Castello Lukeba gratefully heading home in the 62nd minute after Angers goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni had come for, and missed, a Romain Faivre corner. It was 5-0 with two minutes left when Moussa Dembélé broke clear to score.

Lyon are three points off top spot and can move level with the leaders if they get the better of Lorient in their rearranged fixture in midweek. In contrast, Angers are firmly in the relegation zone and have just two points from six outings, with 17 goals conceded.

THE PLAYER: Karl Toko-Ekambi

Toko-Ekambi showed no pity to his former club as he netted a brace here. The Cameroon star is firmly in form having also scored one goal and set up another in the midweek defeat of AJ Auxerre.

THE STAT: 12

Angers have let in 12 goals in three games in seven days, with this hammering following their 3-1 reverse at ESTAC Troyes last weekend and their 4-2 home loss to Stade de Reims on Wednesday. Before that they also lost 3-1 at home to Stade Brestois 29, and Baticle must now fear for his future.
