London City Lionesses go level on points with Championship leaders | OneFootball

London City Lionesses won one of three Barclays Women’s Championship local derbies, Newcastle United and Southampton also coming out on top.

London City were 2-0 winners over Charlton Athletic, to overtake them on goal-difference but sit behind leaders Birmingham by the same measure. The Lionesses broke the deadlock nine minutes after the restart, Sofia Jakobsson winning possession in the box and floating a cross to the back post where Izzy Goodwin headed home. The lead was doubled midway through the second half, Kosovare Asllani finding Jakobsson to score when through on goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse.

A Beth Lumsden brace was enough for Newcastle United to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Lumsden opened the scoring for Newcastle inside the first 30 minutes, cutting inside to fire high into the net. Three minutes into the second half, Lumsden found the net again but this time direct from a corner kick. The hosts halved the deficit with a dozen minutes to go, Natasha Fenton’s deep cross tapped in by Emily Scarr.

Southampton’s five-goal win at Fratton Park came with a late flourish, the Saints leaving Portsmouth without a point from their first six games in the Championship. Pompey fell behind to an own-goal late in the first period, the ball deflecting in off Riva Casley. Megan Collett doubled the lead on the hour mark and the Saints struck three times in the dying minutes with a Rianna Dean double and one from Molly Pike.

Bristol City scored very early and very late in the match for a 2-1 victory over Blackburn. Less than 90 seconds in and Lexi Lloyd-Smith was played through on goal by Abi Harrison to finish. City held the lead until the last 15 minutes, when Maria Edwards fired Rovers level. Then in stoppage time Bristol were back in front, Emily Syme finding the net.
