Reds centre-back Virgil van Dijk has admitted that the error that goalkeeper Adrian made against Atletico Madrid cost Liverpool the match.

The Spanish giants were second best for large parts at Anfield on Wednesday night, but they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2, progressing to the quarter-final stage of the Champions League 4-2 on aggregate.

Gini Wijnaldum gave Liverpool the lead on the night just before half time.

However, despite Liverpool creating a number of golden opportunities throughout the second half, the Reds could not convert, meaning the game went to extra time with the aggregate score at 1-1.

Liverpool doubled their lead on the night and took a 2-1 lead on aggregate when Roberto Firmino scored early in the first half of extra time, however, an error from Adrian shortly after saw Marcos Llorente score the away goal Atletico Madrid needed.

Despite Liverpool possessing a 2-1 lead on the night, the game was locked at 2-2 on aggregate, meaning the Reds had to score again.

However, with the Reds taking more risks, Llorente scored again, just before the first half of extra time came to an end. This saw Atletico Madrid equalise on the night, and ultimately seal the deal on aggregate.

Alvaro Morata scored late in the second half of extra time, meaning Atletico Madrid won the game 3-2 on the night, and progressed 4-2 on aggregate.

Adrian’s mistake ultimately cost Liverpool the tie, which Van Dijk discussed when the match concluded.

“Anyone can make a mistake,’ said Van Dijk, as quoted by HITC. “It happens. But Adrian’s misjudgement seemed to turn the game around.

“You win together, you lose together. Things happen in matches. We lost. That’s tough to take.”

Van Dijk is spot on. It could have happened to anyone. Adrian has done reasonably well for the Reds this season, but a lot of that has been forgotten due to what happened on Wednesday night.

Adrian made a huge error and he knows it, but, he has to move on. This also applies to the supporters.
