Sheffield United still owe Liverpool money for the signing of striker Rhian Brewster, a report from The Liverpool Echo has revealed.

It was a quiet January transfer window for the Blades, who were one of just two Championship clubs not to make a senior signing last month.

That, it has been revealed, is due to the fact that the club have been placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL, due to failure to pay previous transfer fees to other clubs.

Now it seems as though Liverpool, are one club who have been affected by that situation at Bramall Lane.

According to this update, Sheffield United recently missed a payment they were due to make to Liverpool, for the signing of Brewster back in the summer of 2020.

While it is not known exactly how much that payment was, it is thought that it did contribute to the Blades being placed under this embargo.

Brewster, joined Sheffield United for a reported £23.5million two-and-a-half years ago, a club record fee for the Blades, with the striker signing a contract until the summer of 2025.

Nick Montgomery has made how many appearances for Sheffield United?

But having been blighted through injuries and other issues, the 22-year-old has so far scored just five goals in 63 appearances in all competitions for the Blades.

The Verdict

You do get the feeling that this embargo should not be a major concern for Sheffield United.

While they may not have signed anyone in January, they still managed to keep hold of their key players, despite speculation surrounding the likes of Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye.

As a result, given they still sit second in the Championship table, 12 points clear of the play-off places, they still look well on course for promotion back to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the proposed takeover of the club by Nigerian billionaire Dozy Mmobousi should help solve the issue of the embargo, and ensure Liverpool get what they are owed sooner rather than later.
