Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes 'insisted' on playing through a broken hand in their 4-2 win against Sheffield United on Wednesday, a report claims.

Fernandes scored twice and grabbed an assist for Rasmus Hojlund as the Red Devils came from behind twice to beat the Blades at Old Trafford.

However, in the days leading up to the match, manager Erik ten Hag revealed his skipper was an injury doubt having sustained a problem in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final with Coventry City.

The Times report the injury picked up by Fernandes at Wembley was actually a broken hand suffered during a fall, but he was determined to play against Sheffield Utd regardless and took to the pitch with strapping to protect the wounded area.

Fernandes scored the third of Man Utd's three goals in their draw with Coventry at the weekend before stepping up to convert their fourth penalty in a shootout win.

On Wednesday against Sheffield Utd, he brought Man Utd level to 2-2 with another spot-kick before putting the hosts ahead late on with a sensational strike from 25 yards with his weaker left foot. Ten Hag's side rounded off the scoring when Fernandes squared for Hojlund to tap in late on, with the Dane coming up with his first goal since February.

Man Utd have stumbled through the 2023/24 season battling various injuries and illnesses, with over 60 separate cases reported from within Ten Hag's camp this campaign alone.

Fernandes and Man Utd are back in action on Saturday when they welcome relegation-battling Burnley to Old Trafford. They then have an eight-day break before travelling to Crystal Palace on 9 May before hosting Arsenal and Newcastle United in their final home games, ending the season away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
