Here's our Liverpool FC news recap for Saturday, 10th February 2024. The Reds beat Burnley 3-1 at Anfield in the Premier League.

Liverpool got back on track on Saturday. This was the Reds' first game since losing 3-1 at Arsenal and one in which they desperately needed three points in the title race.

They got them, thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Liverpool remain top of the Premier League, then, having dropped to second after Manchester City beat Everton.

They did it despite a flu outbreak in the squad, too, and injuries piling up. An impressive win, then, and a very important one.

Trent sets new record

Trent Alexander-Arnold only played 45 minutes against Burnley but it was enough for him to set a new Premier League record. The Liverpool right-back is on another level.

Trent Alexander-Arnold assisted Liverpool's opener against Burnley on Saturday. His corner was met by Diogo Jota for what is actually just his fourth Premier League assist of the season.

But more importantly, it's Alexander-Arnold's 58th assist in the competition across his career. That's now a new record for assists by a defender, putting him one ahead of Andy Robertson.

Notably, the Liverpool pair are also the only active players in the top 10 - the fact they also occupy 1st and 2nd shows just how revolutionary they've been. There have never been a full-back pair quite like them.

Alisson misses win

Alisson Becker was the notable omission from Liverpool's starting XI set to face Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The Brazilian shot-stopper was not spotted from the pre-match walk in the city, leading to speculation that he would be missing from today's game.

These fears were confirmed following the announcement of today's lineup, which saw number two Caoimhin Kelleher marked as the man to start between the sticks.

The club have confirmed that Alisson's absence is not injury-related, and that he missed out today due to illness.

He is joined by Joe Gomez on the sick list, who also missed out with the flu.

Trent goes off

To the surprise of many, Trent Alexander-Arnold was substituted at half-time of Saturday's game against Burnley.

This has brought some to speculate that Alexander-Arnold was substituted due to an injury scare - something that would act as a cause for concern due to the defender having only recently returned from the sidelines.

The 25-year-old had been out for close to a month after sustaining a knee problem against Arsenal - and Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the defender felt something in the same problem area.

He told BBC Sport: "Same area in the knee. Nothing really bad but he felt it again and we have to see. We will assess it.

Bayer Leverkusen faced their biggest match of the season on Saturday as Bayern Munich came to town. The two title rivals knew that whoever won would walk away as title favourites.

Well, there was no doubt who the favourites were after this. Leverkusen ran out 3-0 winners, wrapping things up in stoppage time to send out an enormous statement.

Xabi Alonso now has his side sitting five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and undefeated in all competitions. It's now 31 games in all comps - one game from Bayern Munich's German record, set in 2020.

And what a run it's been. 27 wins, four draws, a whopping 93 goals scored to just 18 conceded and 15 clean sheets. It's remarkable and there's no question that Liverpool are watching closely.

Liverpool break attendance record

Liverpool were able to overcome early struggles to beat Burnley 3-1 this afternoon - and they did it in front of a record league attendance at Anfield.

Some 59,896 supporters were present as the Anfield Road development surpassed its latest milestone, opening up its hospitality to fans.

It breaks the previous record for a league game held at Anfield of 58,757, a record that had stood since December 1949.

With more eyes on an Anfield league fixture than ever before, it wasn't the perfect start for Liverpool, who endured a sluggish start against the Clarets.
