Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is putting up a very special pair of his football boots up for auction. The Argentine will do so in partnership with Adidas, to raise money for children who need it for treatment in the fight against cancer.

Messi previously donated the boots he wore when he scored his 644th goal for Barcelona, to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Catalan National Museum of Art). The superstar did so to mark a historic occasion, when he surpassed Pele’s decades-old record for most goals scored for a single club.

Messi surpassed Pele’s tally with Santos, when he scored in Barcelona’s win against Real Valladolid back in December. The Blaugrana talisman’s special pair of Adidas boots were then sent to the museum where they are currently on display. They are set to stay there for another month, before being auctioned off in April.

The auction will be to benefit the museum’s program for young cancer patients and their families. Messi also spoke about the wonderful cause in an interview following his record-breaking achievement.

“Reaching the record of 644 goals with the same club has given me a lot of joy, but the most important thing is to be able to give something back to the children who fight for their health. We hope the auction in April will increase knowledge of this great cause,” said the 33-year-old.

Lionel Messi has once again proven how his success is just as inspiring off the pitch, as it is on it. Hopefully the records can keep flowing for the Argentine, as can the gestures towards these great causes.
