Boxing legend Mike Tyson has fired a warning to Canelo Alvarez that he will deal with him in the boxing ring if he criticises Lionel Messi.
Messi got his World Cup campaign up and running by scoring a penalty in the shock 2-1 defeat by Saudi Arabia.
An angry Argentina took the field against Mexico and it was Messi who turned up when his nation needed him.
He struck his goal beautifully against Mexico to give Argentina the lead and settle any nerves, because this was a game they could not afford to lose after what happened in their opening game.
Canelo threatened Messi after footage on social media emerged of the footballer kicking a Mexico shirt that was lying on the dressing room floor after he helped Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 at the World Cup finals.
However, due to the threat that Canelo showed towards Messi, it was inevitable that his huge army of followers would defend Messi and there was none other than boxing legend Mike Tyson.
Iron Mike told BBO Sports: “Someone called Canelo threatened Messi. If he dares to touch Messi, I will have to return to the ring.”
However, the contest between Canelo and Tyson will not happen because Canelo took to Twitter to apologise to the former Barcelona star.
“These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place, for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina.
“Every day we learn something new, and this time it was my turn.
“I wish both teams much success in their matches today, and here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”
Iron Mike has always been a huge fan of one of the greatest footballers of all time in Lionel Messi and he showed his support for Messi in the lead-up to the biggest game of his career in the 2014 World Cup final.
“Go Argentina! Love watching Messi play.” is what Tyson tweeted back in 2014.
On Wednesday, Messi and his Argentina team-mates did the business as they defeated Poland 2-0 that saw them qualify as group winners.
Messi and Argentina will be hoping to go all the way in this year’s competition, however, they would need to negotiate a Round of 16 tie against Australia on Saturday night if they are to keep their dream alive of reaching the final.
