According to a report from L’Équipe, RC Lens are not considering the possibility that they could be rewarded with a spot in Europe following the decision from the DNCG to relegate Olympique Lyonnais to Ligue 2.

French football’s financial watchdog put the cat amongst the pigeons when the news broke last night that they had chosen not to overturn Lyon’s administrative relegation amid concerns over Eagle Football’s rising debt.

Lyon have signalled that they will appeal this decision, and the club believes that have the requisite resources for the upcoming season. However, if their appeal fails and they are relegated, the club will not be allowed to compete in Europe.

RC Strasbourg Alsace would likely be provided with their place in the UEFA Europa League, and RC Lens, as the next best placed team, would compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League. However, when approached by L’Équipe for a comment on the situation, Lens refused to talk about the hypotheticals.

The club told the French outlet, “It is absolutely not thinking about European qualification… Last season’s league placements have been confirmed; the off-season’s administrative period is only just beginning.”
