Leicester City head coach Willie Kirk says that his side have earned the right to play their way against Chelsea.

The Foxes take on the Barclays Women’s Super League champions at The King Power Stadium on Sunday evening. Leicester City go into the match on the back of consecutive victories in which they have scored 11 goals.

Leicester City’s previous home league fixtures against Chelsea have resulted in huge 9-0 and 8-0 losses, however, The Foxes have grown significantly in head coach Kirk’s time in charge and they will now take on The Blues confident in their own ability.

“They were heavy reverses; one of them was my third game in charge of the club and it wasn’t a nice evening,” Kirk said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “I’m pretty sure it was raining and that summed up how I felt at the time.

“Things have changed, we are in a much more positive place and we are looking forward to it. We have progressed massively as a club and as a team. The squad is unrecognisable to that night.

“I’m really excited about it and the challenge we’ve given to the players is that they’ve earned the right to play our way against Chelsea. We’re not going to try and shut up shop, we are not going to sit deep, we are going to play the way that we have played for the vast majority of the season and we are going to see where that takes us.”

In the away fixture, Leicester City lost 5-2 but they were far from disgraced. Kirk is looking forward to seeing how far his side have come in the last three months.

He said “They’re the best in the country and they’ve proved that not just last year, not just this year but for four years in a row and they’re trying to make it five.

“It’s a tough test but it’s a test that we are really looking forward to and we are really excited about. We want to use it as a way to see how far we’ve come. We went down to Kingsmeadow earlier in the season and got turned over 5-2 but we certainly weren’t disgraced that day. We went two goals down quite early and could’ve collapsed but we showed the character to come back and got in at half-time 3-2 down and well in the game. They just picked us off eventually.

“We want to see how far we’ve come and go toe-to-toe with them as much as possible.”
