This transfer window was all going so well for Chelsea, despite taking something of a wobble here late on.
The Blues got a lot of business done early and sold 7 of the 10 players they wanted to sell.
However with deadline day now here, those final 3 are still in place, and two of them have the biggest wages of all. Both Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have had little interest all summer, but not enough to take seriously.
Regardless of how everything else went, we just knew it would come down to this – just like last year, Sterling and Chilwell’s wages make them almost impossible to shift. They don’t want to accept less money elsewhere, Chelsea don’t want to loan them out and let them run down their contracts and go for free.
Last year the Blues ended up accepting at the last minute that it was better to have their wages paid than not – so Sterling went to Arsenal on loan, where he impressed nobody. That hasn’t made it easy to find him a home this year.
Raheem Sterling in talks with Fulham for deadline day.
But with just hours left in the window and some teams as desperate to strengthen as we are to shed, there does seem a small chance that the winger finds a new home.
According to the latest Tweet from Fabrizio Romano, Fulham are interested in Sterling. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard them mentioned. They’ve struggled mightily to add to Marco Silva’s squad this summer, and probably fear losing the top coach if they don’t show willing to help him out.
Their struggle to sign Shakhtar winger Kevin may be playing into our hands here, with just hours of the window left…
