“Here we go… again!” – Incredible 24 hour Nicolas Jackson saga ends with Chelsea getting their deal and Bayern getting their man

There are transfer sagas which last the whole summer, then there are transfer sagas which last just 24 hours. We’ve just experienced one of the latter.

Chelsea’s deal to send Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich on loan all came together very quickly at the end of last week, then fell apart even faster. With the striker literally on his way to Munich to do his medical, Chelsea cancelled the deal in the light of Liam Delap’s hamstring injury.

But Jackson and his agent Ali Barat weren’t giving up. They stayed put in Munich, and now, incredibly, the deal is back on.

Perhaps because Chelsea managed to recall Marc Guiu from his loan at Sunderland, or perhaps because Bayern offered even more this time around, the deal is back on. Fabrizio Romano has given it a unique “here we go again” to confirm it.

Second time lucky for Jackson and Bayern

Chelsea agree a second deal with Bayern Munich for Nicolas Jackson.

Romano’s information about the new deal is fascinating – he claims that the Blues have kept the original €15m loan fee from the previous arrangement, but have now made it an obligation to buy next summer.

That fee isn’t clear yet, but we’d expect them to have been asking for at least €70m in total.

Chelsea put profits ahead of pitch in late scramble

Of course Chelsea used their leverage here to get a better deal – but there is a cost. They have now left themselves pretty short up front. With Liam Delap potentially out for months, Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro are our only real strikers. That is a huge risk for a team playing in 4 competitions.

It seems that profits have taken precedence over the pitch once again. Let’s just hope this is all because Delap’s injury is in fact far less severe than feared, and he can return sooner rather than later.
