Kaiserslautern beat Schalke in Traditionsverein derby

Schalke’s Miron Muslic hoped to build on last week’s win over Hertha Berlin, but his team barely created opportunities in the first-half. Relatively, Christopher Antwi-Adjei looked lively, but his two free-kicks hardly troubled Julian Krahl.

The hosts started the game brightly, but they were far worse as the game went on with no attempts in the entire half. Nothing changed after the break until Ron Schallenberg fouled Daniel Hanslik inside the box. The referee didn’t notice the incident, but he pointed to the penalty spot following VAR intervention.

Captain Marlon Ritter steps up to calmly slot home the penalty-kick. Kaiserslautern’s opening goal fueled the game that had very little going on for nearly an hour until that point. And, the atmosphere inside the stadium even gets to another level after the goal.

Schalke thought they had a great chance to equalize in the final ten minutes when Leon Robinson saw a straight red card seconds after coming on as a substitute. However, VAR came to Kaiserslautern’s rescue once again as the decision was correctly overturned to a yellow card.

The home fans cheered that decision, but there were boos a few minutes later when the fourth official signaled there would be 12 additional minutes. However, Schalke were unable to even create one decent chance in the added time. Faride Alido's movement in the other box was a big reason for that, but he failed to score an easy chance in the 102nd minute.

Both teams will take part in next week’s DFB-Pokal first round after picking up three points from the first two rounds of 2. Bundesliga.
