In a surprising development, Sky Sports reports that FC Barcelona have made enquiries for former Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, who plies his trade for Tottenham Hotspur.

It is further claimed that the Blaugrana are exploring the possibility of a deal for the Spanish defender considering that he only has one year left on his contract with Spurs.

Marcos Alonso replacement?

Barcelona bid goodbye to Marcos Alonso this summer following the expiry of his contract which has left them without a senior backup option for Alejandro Balde in the left-back position.

However, manager Hansi Flick does have returning loanee Alex Valle and Barcelona Atletic’s Gerard Martin as options, with the pair impressing on the pre-season tour of the USA.

In fact, earlier today, reports emerged claiming that the Barcelona head coach was ready to bet on Martin as Balde’s backup in the left-back position next season.

Hence, the reports of interest in Sergio Reguilon do come off as a bit strange, although this is not the first time that the ex-Real Madrid man has been linked with Barcelona.

Tottenham open to sale

Reguilon is out of favour at Tottenham as he is not a part of manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans. The left-back spent the first half of the last season on loan at Manchester United before moving to Brentford for the second half of the campaign.

Tottenham are more than open to selling the Spanish international whose contract will expire in the summer of 2025.

However, as things stand, a move to Barcelona appears unlikely given that the Catalans have other priorities such as Nico Williams and Joao Cancelo.
