Jürgen Klopp admits he “understands” why Xabi Alonso turned down the chance to succeed him at Liverpool.

Earlier on Friday, Alonso discounted his potential return to Anfield this summer by confirming he will remain as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach.

Sporting’s Rúben Amorim and Brighton counterpart Roberto De Zerbi are now the latest forerunners for the soon-to-be vacant post.

But while Klopp remained guarded on Alonso’s decision, the Reds’ manager acknowledged the former playmaker’s likely motivations.

“The one part I can speak about is being a young manager at a club doing really well,” said Klopp.

“I had a similar situation and did pretty much the same and never regretted it. That’s pretty much all I can say.

“Xabi is doing a great job there and it’s possible they can keep the team together. It’s not always like that.

“I can understand why he wants to do that.”

Klopp’s side will face off against De Zerbi’s Brighton in Sunday’s Premier League encounter at Anfield.
