Goals from Anthony Musaba, Ike Ugbo and Windass himself all helped seal a crucial three points for the Owls.

A point from their final day clash against Sunderland will be enough to secure their place in the Championship for another year.

This was Windass’ fifth league goal of the campaign, having featured 24 times in the Championship (all stats from Fbref).

Windass celebrated the important win over Albion at the weekend with a post on social media reflecting on the victory.

He claimed he wouldn’t want to play anywhere else, amid speculation over his future with the Yorkshire outfit.

“What a club, what a place,” wrote Windass, via Instagram.

“And my team mates, wouldn’t wanna play with a different group of boys.”

It was Windass’ goal last season in the play-off final that helped secure promotion back to the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday.

He hasn’t featured as regularly in the second tier as he did in League One, but two goals in his last two games has proven his importance to the side’s survival in the division.

The 30-year-old has been with the club since January 2020, signing from Wigan Athletic on loan and then on a permanent basis, and has been a regular presence in the side when available.

But his contract is set to expire at the end of this campaign, meaning the trip to the Stadium of Light could prove to be his final game for the club unless an extension can be agreed.

With the club’s league status now all but secured, plans for their summer business can get underway, which may include discussions with players over new deals.

Sheffield Wednesday's survival hopes

Sheffield Wednesday are 20th in the Championship table, and will need just one point from their game against the Black Cats to avoid the drop.

Sunderland will have nothing to play for when the two sides meet on 4 May, with Mike Dodds’ side sitting 15th in the table, safe from relegation and unable to qualify for the play-offs.

Wednesday are unbeaten in their last five games, with this run proving crucial in moving the team out of the bottom three.

Coach Danny Rohl has earned a lot of plaudits for his role in turning things around at Hillsborough, as relegation looked inevitable when he took over in October.

Windass’ form could earn him a new contract

Windass has performed well during the run-in and has proven himself capable of helping the club achieve survival.

Given his contract is up at the end of the season, this form could be what persuades the Owls to negotiate a new deal in the summer.

The 30-year-old has been an important player over the years, and was key to their promotion back to the Championship.

But any decision over a new deal may come down to Rohl, who must be backed in the summer by the owners as they risk losing such an impressive coach otherwise.
