It’s been an eventful week in the world of football, with the ‘European Super League’ proposal causing a stir amongst football supporters across the globe.

With a number of English clubs pulling out of their agreement with the league, it has now been reported that Rangers and Celtic could join a ‘British Super League’, which would see them move ahead of the the clubs in the EFL.

Speaking in a recent interview on talkSPORT, Bournemouth boss Jonathan Woodgate issued his thoughts on this new report, and questioned whether Celtic or Rangers would beat the Cherries.

“I don’t know that they can go straight in. How can they go straight in and leave the Championship out, when you’ve got all of us striving to get there?

“It wouldn’t be fair at all, and if it does they would have to start in the Championship and climb up. We’re Bournemouth and would Celtic and Rangers beat us? I’m not so sure.”

Woodgate’s Bournemouth side are currently sat third in the Championship table, and will fancy their chances of winning promotion into the Premier League this term.

Woodgate went on to voice his frustrations at the money involved in any sort of ‘Super League’, before stating that both Rangers and Celtic should start from the lower leagues if they were to move across to take on English teams.

“You are boiling it down to money again, like the Super League, and why does money have to run the game? Why does it have to boil down to television rights, and all this palaver about money, money, money. If they want to come into the league they have got to start off somewhere, and it can’t be at the top.”

Woodgate’s Bournemouth side are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on promotion-chasing rivals Brentford, in what is likely to be a closely-fought battle at the Vitality Stadium.

The Verdict:

You can understand where Woodgate is coming from.

I share his view in saying that there are some teams in the Championship that would give Celtic and Rangers are very competitive match, and it would seem slightly unfair to throw the Scottish pair into the ‘British Super League’.

This proposal seems to be driven by money yet again though, and I have my doubts as to whether it’ll take off, especially after the widespread criticism from supporters across the country.

It’s going to be an interesting few months ahead though, that’s for sure.
