“There was interest there (AC Milan) but there were still a couple of hurdles to get over the line,” Hendrick said, per the Chronicle. But Newcastle beat Milan to the deal after acting swiftly.

“Teams came in quickly and wanted to get a deal done,” the midfielder continued.

“It was my in my best interest to get going with a team and get back into squad training.”

With the new Premier League season less than two weeks away, Hendrick was eager to join up with his new team-mates as soon as possible.

The midfielder went on to insist his favourite role is in centre-midfield, despite often lining up on the right flank for the Clarets.

“It depends on what formation the new manager wants to play. The best I have played has been with Burnley in centre midfield for the full year,” the 28-year-old said.

“At the Euros with Ireland, I played there, at Derby County I played in the middle of a three.

“That’s where you will get the best from me.

“If I am playing centrally I think I can add something to the team. It’s something I want to bring.”

Hendrick will be hoping to make his Magpies bow against West Ham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Before he can do that, though, he will be joining up with the Ireland squad for the September international break.
