The Germany winger was hurt following a collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma late in the first half of Saturday’s high-profile quarter-final tie in Atlanta.

It was immediately apparent that Musiala had sustained a serious injury as Bayern’s medical staff rushed to his aid and he received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off and replaced by Serge Gnabry at half-time.

Manager Vincent Kompany admitted after Bayern’s 2-0 defeat to the Champions League holders at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium that the injury “did not look good” and revealed the 22-year-old had been taken to hospital.

Bayern have now confirmed following further assessment by doctors that Musiala sustained a fractured fibula associated with a broken and dislocated ankle and will undergo surgery soon after flying from the club’s tournament base in Orlando back to Munich on Sunday morning.

They did not put an estimated time frame on a recovery, saying only that Musiala would be sidelined for a “long period”. Early reports in Germany suggested that he was facing at least four months out.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said: “This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all. This hits FC Bayern.

“Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team. Furthermore, there’s also a huge human impact and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period.

“He’ll get everything he needs from us. We’ll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he’s back on the pitch.”

The latest injury is another setback for Musiala, one of the finest players in Europe at his best who was making his first start since April on Saturday after recovering from a hamstring problem that saw him miss the end of Bayern’s title-winning Bundesliga season.

Kompany said his “blood was boiling” with frustration after the injury to Musiala, while Donnarumma - who dropped to one knee seemingly close to tears after the incident - was accused by Bayern captain Manuel Neuer of taking a “risk” with the way he entered the challenge.

“[This is] a situation where you don’t have to go in like that; that’s reckless,” Neuer said. “He accepts the risk of injuring his opponent.

“I went to him and said: ‘Don’t you want to go to [check on] our player? It’s a question of respect to go over and wish the guy all the best. He did it afterwards. Fairness is always important. I would have reacted differently.”
