Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that his side can become more ruthless in front of goal by getting the fine details right.

The Red Devils face Everton in their next match at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday. Manchester United go into the game off the back of a 3-1 defeat to neighbours Manchester City last weekend. On that occasion, Manchester United created as many goalscoring opportunities as their opponents but they struggled to profit from the big chances that came their way.

When speaking to the media ahead of the Everton fixture, Manchester United boss Skinner said that getting things right in front of the opposition goal is all about fine details.

“In that game [against Manchester City], we were really good for large parts,” Skinner said. “There were spells before and after half-time [that changed the game]; the first goal was offside, so it kills your momentum at the end of the half.

“It’s the details. We looked at the chances that we created and it’s just that second-guessing of goalkeeper positions and so on. For example, when Geyse marauds down that right-hand side, the more she plays, the more she understands everybody and understands how and when to play, it’s the tiniest details. If you’re off for a second in that final third, it can be the difference between a block and a goal.

“It’s part and parcel of how we’ve had to grow this year, we’ve had to grow later together but I absolutely want to develop that between now and the end of the season and into next season for sure.”

Manchester United have recorded huge wins in their previous two meetings with latest opponents Everton, however, Skinner thinks that Sunday’s contest will be a very different challenge.

He said “I’m definitely not expecting anything like the previous games. We’ve played them twice this season and it’s been five and seven nil but I’m not expecting that at all. Watching their recent games, they’ve been more solid in defence.

“Brian [Sørensen] has always had this build-up ability at Everton to create overloads, so in build phase, they’re very good. You have to be patient, you have to be composed and you have to concentrate. If you can do that, they’ll give you opportunities to create chances yourself.

“I’m not expecting the same level of free-flowing goals. If we do that then we’ve done a fantastic job but Everton are a much more solid team, they’re working hard. I’m expecting a difficult game as always.”
