Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has proven to have a “yellow card-phobia” – he’s taken off the majority of players on bookings this season.
Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it note how a total of sixteen of the 26 Inter players on a yellow card this season have ended up being substituted by the coach.
Young defender Yann Bisseck got his first chance to start for Inter on Wednesday.
The German was in the lineup for the Nerazzurri’s Champions League group stage match against Red Bull Salzburg.
But whilst Bisseck started, he only lasted half the match.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi showed no mercy in taking the 22-year-old off at halftime. Veteran former Lazio and Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij took his place.
And the reason for Bisseck’s departure from the pitch was not a bad performance.
Far from it, the 22-year-old had acquitted himself quite well in his first start for the Nerazzurri.
There were few occasions in which Bisseck looked like a player who was lacking confidence or experience in defensive situations.
But the one aspect of Bisseck’s display that perhaps showed some naivete was that he picked up a booking.
The fact that Inzaghi decided that he’d seen enough after Bisseck picked up a first half yellow may have seemed harsh.
But it is not much different than the policy that Inzaghi uses for every single one of his players.
Memorably, last season Alessandro Bastoni came off after right around half an hour in an away clash against Udinese.
Clearly, Inzaghi feels that there is no reason to risk a player receiving a second yellow.
And the numbers bear this out.
The Gazzetta note that so far this season, 26 Inter players have went into the referee’s notebook.
And of those 26, sixteen have ended up coming off sooner or later. And usually sooner rather than later.
