Is Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka becoming frustrated with Thomas Tuchel?

On Sunday afternoon, Bayern Munich fell to a crushing defeat at home to Werder Bremen, subsequently losing ground in the Bundesliga title race. With Bayer Leverkusen now seven points clear at the top of the table, in spite of Bayern’s game in hand on Wednesday, it is certainly not going all Der Rekordmeister’s way at this moment in time.

However, for Leon Goretzka, there is even more reason to feel frustrated. After a poor end to the campaign last season, the former Schalke midfielder has been key for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season, helping to stabilise the side in the centre of the park prior to the winter break.

However, since Raphaël Guerreiro has returned from injury, Tuchel has been utilising the Portuguese international more often, and on Sunday, he once again preferred him over Goretzka in midfield. It was a decision that did not sit well with Goretzka, who politely responded with “Not today, sorry.” when questioned by Bild about his feelings after the game against Bremen.

Tuchel’s admiration for Guerreiro is well documented; after signing the 30-year-old during his time at Borussia Dortmund, he was a main target of Tuchel’s in the summer when his contract expired at the Westfalenstadion. However, while his performances have been reasonable, on Sunday, he often found himself unable to affect the game, and with a 75% pass success rate, he offered Bremen far too many opportunities.

Therefore, it is expected that Goretzka will start against Union Berlin on Wednesday as Bayern look to bounce back from their first home defeat of the season. Nevertheless, if Guerreiro keeps starting over the German international, then his relationship with Tuchel may continue to sour.
