The Tractor Boys are reportedly set to win the race for the versatile 40-year-old, with talkSPORT's Alex Crook claiming earlier this week that the ex-England international's former club Watford could not ultimately meet his wage demands.

That has opened the door for Ipswich to make their move, but he's not the only member of the Young family that may be arriving at Portman Road this summer.

As reported by the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich have taken Tyler Young on trial - albeit for their under-21's and not the first-team.

Young travelled to Slovakia with Town's under-21's last week, and featured on Tuesday in a pre-season friendly against non-league Needham Market, with manager John McGreal looking to see if the youngster can offer something to his squad for the upcoming season.

The 19-year-old spent time at multiple academies, such as Arsenal, MK Dons and QPR until he departed the latter in 2024, before going on to sign a first professional deal with Peterborough United.

The central midfielder failed to make a League One appearance for Posh though, with his only outing coming in October 2024 against his hometown club Stevenage in an EFL Trophy match at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Young had the chance to play against his father Ashley in the FA Cup back in January when Peterborough were drawn to face Everton away in round three, but Darren Ferguson opted to keep the teen on the bench, with Young snr coming on for the Toffees in the 73rd minute.

Ashley & Tyler Young signing for Ipswich Town this summer would be a feel-good story

Whilst Tyler Young may not be the level that Ipswich require for their first-team anytime soon, bringing him in for the under-21's would be a low-risk addition to see if he can develop into a useful player in the future.

The fact that Peterborough released the teen after just one year shouldn't be seen as a negative - he wasn't given much of a chance by Darren Ferguson, but Ipswich may have the better coaches and facilities to develop Young jnr into a better player.
