Watford are unlikely to be able to match the wages Ashley Young was on at Everton as they seek to bring the player back to Vicarage Road.

Watford have had a very busy summer transfer window so far, with new boss Paulo Pezzolano reshaping the squad ahead of his first season in English football.

Generally, the Hornets have targeted young, exciting players who are desperate to prove themselves in the game, with Bayern Munich’s Nestory Irankunda the latest example of that strategy.

That’s an approach that many fans will support, and they will be optimistic about the direction the club are heading, despite the initial anger when Tom Cleverley was dismissed in May.

Yet, if Watford are to be successful, they will need a balanced squad, so reports that the club are targeting Ashley Young make sense.

Of course, the 40-year-old has a connection with the club, as that’s where it all started out for Young as a professional, as he came through the ranks at Vicarage Road.

After leaving in 2007, Young went on to have a stellar career that saw him turn out for Aston Villa, Man Utd, Inter Milan and Everton.

The high point undoubtedly came at Old Trafford, as Young won the Premier League title, whilst he also won 39 caps for England.

Despite all he has achieved, Young has still been playing at a high level, as he made 32 appearances for Everton in the top-flight last season, in his new role as a full-back.

Ashley Young would need to accept a wage drop from his Everton contract

It has been claimed that a return to Watford is rated as 50-50, and it may be difficult for the Championship side to convince Young to join considering he is likely to have offers on the table as a free agent.

Whilst he won’t be motivated by money, Young will rightly assess his options, and Capology estimates his most recent contract at Everton saw him pick up £40,000 a week.

Obviously, that is something that the Hornets won’t be able to get near, even if they don’t have to pay a fee to bring the versatile right-footer.

We must stress once more that these are only estimates, but Capology believes that only Imran Louza and Moussa Sissoko earn above £30,000 a week for Watford, and the knock-on effect of their desire to bring in younger players means the wage bill will drop.

Any deal for Young would go against that, although we don’t know his demands, and the reality is that, as it stands, he is a free agent.

Nevertheless, this is still a potential deal that will require plenty of negotiation, but Young would be a welcome addition to this Watford squad as they look to get the right mix to ensure they’re in the promotion hunt this season.
