FC Bayern will be looking to keep up their 100 percent record in this Champions League season when they face FC Viktoria Plzeň in their second home group match on Tuesday evening (kick-off 18:45 CEST). fcbayern.com takes a closer look at the Czech club.

Six-time Czech champions

Viktoria Plzeň were founded in 1911 and play their home matches at the Doosan Arena, which is just 210 kilometres in a beeline from the Allianz Arena in neighbouring Czech Republic. The club, which is based in the western Bohemia region of the country, can look back on numerous successes in the past 15 years: all six of Viktoria’s Czech championships have come during this period.

Plzeň ended Slavia Prague’s three-year reign as Czech champions by reclaiming the title in 2022.

Four previous encounters

Tuesday’s meeting at the Allianz Arena will be the fifth between Bayern and Viktoria. In the 1971/72 campaign, the two sides faced off in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, when the East Europeans were still known as TJ Škoda Plzeň. FCB won 1-0 in the away leg of the first-round tie, before Sepp Maier, Uli Hoeneß, Gerd Müller & Co wrapped it up in Munich with a 6-1 victory.

The first encounter in the Champions League came in the 2013/14 season in the group stage. Pep Guardiola’s Bayern side enjoyed a 5-0 success at home thanks to goals from Franck Ribéry (2), David Alaba, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Götze. In Pilsen, a header from Mario Mandžukić secured a 1-0 win for FCB.

Current form

The defending Fortuna liga champions are still unbeaten and in first place after nine matches with 23 points. Michal Bílek’s side drew 1-1 with Bohemians 1905 on Saturday ahead of their clash with Champions League group leaders Bayern. Viktoria have work to do in Europe’s premier club competition having lost their opening two matches 5-1 at Barcelona and 2-0 at home to Inter Milan.
