Inter Milan’s second consecutive foray into the Champions League knockout stage pits them against defending Primeira Liga champions Porto on Wednesday.
Simone Inzaghi’s side defied the odds to leave Barcelona in their wake as they claimed a runner-up finish in Group C behind perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
They now embark on a daunting mission to make it out of the Champions League round of 16 for the first time since 2010/11, knowing that going the distance in Europe is their best chance of landing a major title.
Despite ousting Udinese 3-1 at home last weekend, Inter are no longer relevant in the Serie A trophy race, with pacesetters Napoli already a whopping 15 points off.
Inspired by a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W4, D1), the Italians will be confident about beating Porto, just as they did in their two previous Champions League home meetings.
However, Sergio Conceicao’s men head into proceedings as one of the most in-form sides in Europe at the moment, as they’re unbeaten since October (W19, D3).
A narrow 1-0 home triumph over fellow Primeira Liga rivals Rio Ave last weekend extended the Dragons’ superb winning streak in all competitions to ten matches.
There may not be a better time all season for Porto to launch their effort of progressing beyond the Champions League first knockout round since the 2020/21 season.
Inter Milan
Inter saw Porto off in their only previous Champions League knockout tie, going unbeaten in both legs of their last-16 contest in 2004/05 (W1, D1), including a 3-1 victory at home.
Another eventful day is on the cards, with the Nerazzurri dispatching Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen by an aggregate score of 5-0 in their last two Champions League home outings.
But last season’s Serie A runners-up haven’t won three Champions League home matches on the trot since 2010 under Jose Mourinho, meaning history could plague them here.
Porto
Porto finished top of Group B ahead of Club Brugge, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid (W4, L2), scoring more goals (12) than their two closest competitors combined.
Conceicao’s men opened their group-stage campaign with back-to-back defeats before stringing together four consecutive victories and will now aim to equal their longest winning run in the competition.
On top of their free-scoring Champions League form, the Portuguese giants have only lost one of their seven previous encounters against Italian opposition in major European competitions (W4, D2).

Inter Milan (3-4-3): Andre Onana; Milan Skriniar, Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi; Denzel Dumfries, Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Marcelo Brozovic, Federico Dimarco; Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez.
Porto (4-4-2): Diogo Costa; Joao Mario, Pepe, David Carmo, Zaidu Sanusi; Andre Franco, Stephen Eustaquio, Marko Grujic, Pepe; Mehdi Taremi, Danny Namaso.
Wednesday’s fixture has all the makings of a closely-contested affair, with both sides heavily relying on their defensive resilience to provide a backbone for success.
Inter should take advantage of home comforts to seal a narrow lead heading into the return leg in Porto.
