Former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli believes that former Nerazzurri coach Jose Mourinho had few options available to him after taking on the Roma job.

The Portuguese tactician enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Inter between 2008 and 2010, culminating in a historic treble in his final season, and will return to Italian football for the first time when he replaces Paulo Fonseca at Roma next term.

Appearing on Italian television channel Rai 2 earlier today, Altobelli insisted that Mourinho would always be loved by Inter fans and felt that Roma was the only viable option for him, following his sacking by Tottenham Hotspur last month.

“Welcome back Mourinho. He has a difficult task, Rome is much harder than Milan, but he is used to strong challenges. He has achieved results with all teams, except in recent years,” Altobelli argued.

“All Inter fans love him, but of course we wish that he will always finish behind Inter. Today he coaches another team and it is right that he too is questioning himself. It is also true that he had no suitors abroad, so he grudgingly returned to Italy.

“I wish him good luck and a good job, but we are always Inter fans and not Mourinho,” the 65-year-old added.

Mourinho won two Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League with Inter before departing for Real Madrid.

The 58-year-old led the Spanish club to the La Liga title in 2012 before returning to former club Chelsea the following year, adding a further Premier League title to the two he had previously won between 2004 and 2006.
