Gareth Southgate is leading England to this summer’s Euros under a lot of pressure, with fans and pundits alike expecting him to deliver after a long wait.

Anything less than lifting the trophy would be considered a failure for the manager, who has stars like Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane at his disposal.

However, even if he fails to take the Three Lions all the way, Man United may keep their doors open for him for their managerial role.

According to The Telegraph, INEOS will not prioritise a “proven trophy winner” in the event they decide to replace Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.

The Dutch coach, who moved to Old Trafford on the back of a prolific spell at Ajax, has underwhelmed in Manchester and may find himself sacked in the coming weeks.

The report adds that United are “wary of prioritising short-term gain and risking long-term pain in any future managerial appointments.”

With United prepared to not judge their next potential manager solely on their trophy record, Southgate’s chances of becoming the club’s manager have increased.

The 53-year-old, who last managed at club level in 2009 in Middlesbrough, has won plenty of plaudits for establishing a very positive culture at St George’s Park.

Considering how toxic the atmosphere is in the red half of Manchester, Southgate’s expertise could certainly come in handy.

This approach also boosts Graham Potter’s chances. The former Brighton and Hove Albion man is admired by many for implementing a coherent style of play at the Amex.

Interestingly, Dan Ashworth, who is favourite to become United’s sporting director, has worked with both of these managers.

Regardless of this supposed new approach, Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel also remains in the running.
