Leicester City take on Newcastle United in the EFL Cup on Tuesday hoping they can progress to the semi-final.

The Foxes boast a good relationship with the EFL Cup, having won it twice under Martin O’Neill over 20 years ago and they will be looking to do the same under Brendan Rodgers.

This is despite a poor season so far with a terrible start to their Premier League campaign having many fear a relegation battle. Whilst their form has recovered, and they sit in 13th, they’re still just two points above the bottom three with a cup-run proving a welcomed break from inconsistent league performances.

They face a Newcastle side smarting after an FA Cup exit at the hands of League One Sheffield Wednesday and will want to put that right in this game as they look to fulfill their lofty ambitions.

It will be a tough game for Leicester who will look to field as strong a side as possible as they bid to reach the semi-finals.

Here, we take a look at how they might line up against the Magpies.

Rodgers is expected to continue with a 4-2-3-1 as he looks to potentially hit Newcastle on the break, persisting with two holding midfielders.

Danny Ward will come back into the starting XI after he was rested against Gillingham, whilst Timothy Castagne will come in Lewis Brunt at right-back, offering more experience in a big game for the Foxes with Luke Thomas on the left.

Whilst Jannik Vestergaard and Caglar Soyuncu both impressed against Gillingham, Rodgers is likely to revert back to the same back four that lost to Fulham last week, with Daniel Amartey and Waet Fous at centre back, although Soyuncu could come in for Amartey.

A midfield pivot of Wilfried N’Didi and Boubakary Soumare will provide a defensive shield and allow Leicester to dominate the middle of the park with energy which will allow Youri Tielemans a license to exploit space in the Newcastle defensive third.

In the wide areas, Ayoze Perez will provide support on the right, taking up central positions when the adventurous Castagne pushes high and wide, with Harvey Barnes on the left.

Those two will provide the ammunition for Kelechi Iheanacho who will be confident going into the game having scored the winner in the FA Cup against Gillingham at the weekend.
