Manchester United received a welcome boost this afternoon when news broke that Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson, will miss the FA Cup final.

The Brazilian was substituted against Spurs on Monday night and it was clear from his frustrated reaction that he would be missing out on something special.

United’s neighbours confirmed this afternoon that he will indeed miss the 25th May showpiece with “a small fracture of his eye socket.”

Given substitute keeper Stefan Ortega’s performance against the North London club when replacing him, United will still have their work cut out to get past City’s last line of defence. But there will definitely be a psychological boost from the absence of the 30 year old.

Kevin de Bruyne was also subbed off in Monday’s game but he has said “I think I’m alright. It’s a bit sore but the place in the Achilles is really sore. It felt like it was a knife at the moment I got the impact. It’s an impact [injury] so it’s not bad. It will be alright.” (source: Premierinjuries.com).

Not for the first time this season, United themselves might have a problem.

Captain Bruno Fernandes returned from injury to play against Newcastle last night but had to be subbed near the end of the game with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

There has been no news so far coming out of Old Trafford on the issue, so hopefully it was a cramp or a small tweak that has calmed down.

Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford started their own comebacks from injury yesterday and there is also hope that Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof could be fit for the showcase final.

Both teams have one more game to play before facing off at Wembley a week on Saturday.

United have a tricky trip to the South coast to face Brighton, while City have to get a win against West Ham at home in order to win a fourth successive Premier League title.
