Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien is never far away from transfer speculation.

In recent days, West Ham United have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old, whilst The Sun credited AFC Bournemouth with an interest in making a move.

That all comes after a summer where he was on Leeds United’s radar.

As it is, Huddersfield have retained O’Brien over two transfer windows now and agreed a new contract with him, as the club look to cash-in on a promotion opportunity in the Championship.

We caught up with FLW’s Huddersfield Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, to discuss O’Brien and whether he thought it was inevitable he would move on in the coming window.

He told us: “I thought it would be inevitable that we’d lose him in January, so I don’t think it’s inevitable that he will go in the summer.

“I think there’s a good chance, probably an 85-90% chance, that he will go in the summer.

“The things that will see him potentially stay are if we go up. He might want to stay at Huddersfield and be the person we build the team around because he is our best player.

“Also if the teams that are interested in him don’t stay in the Premier League.”

Leeds, Town’s fierce West Yorkshire rivals, are the team consistently linked with O’Brien.

Phil Hodgkinson revealed back in the summer that a package worth up to £13m was knocked back by Huddersfield, with Leeds not quite ticking the right boxes.

Leeds’ failure to land a midfielder has contributed to their struggles in the Premier League this season, with relegation a possibility heading into the final 15 games.

Given that, and the fact that Huddersfield are fifth and eyeing the top-flight themselves, Graeme believes there’s a chance O’Brien could be retained.

He continued: “There’s always the chance, fingers crossed, that Leeds might drop. They are in a relegation area and are the team that’s most often linked with him. Why would he leave Huddersfield for Leeds if we are in the same division as them or even above them? It just wouldn’t happen.

“There’s an outside chance he stays, but if he goes, we wish him well. He’s been a fantastic player for the club, he’s a fantastic character and a really good human being. He’s loved by everyone pretty much, so if he goes, we wish him well.

“We just hope we get a decent price for him.”
