The inaugural Arnold Clark Cup invitational kicks off this week in England. Six matches will take place from February 17–20, with Canada, Germany, and Spain joining the host nation.

The round-robin tournament will give each team the opportunity to establish their 2022 form—especially as World Cup qualifiers loom.

England, Germany, and Spain all resume their World Cup-qualifying matches in April. Canada will begin their World Cup-qualifying journey during the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship in July.

What to watch for

Heading into the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup, the four participating nations each rank within the top ten of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. This means spectators can expect a very close competition.

England

The Lionesses currently sit undefeated since they lost against France and Canada in April 2021. But England hasn’t faced a top 10 team since those two losses. Therefore, the Arnold Clark Cup will be a crucial test for the host nation.

FIFA Ranking: 8

Canada

Last year at this time, Canada lost two of their three SheBelieves Cup matches. But that didn’t stop Bev Priestman’s side from rolling through the Tokyo Olympics and claiming their first-ever Olympic gold. In fact, after losing to Brazil in the SheBelieves Cup, Canada went undefeated in their next 13 matches overall.

FIFA Ranking: 6

Germany

Germany has the highest FIFA ranking out of any of the four participating teams. Like England, however, Germany wasn’t at the Summer Olympics. This means, they’ll have much to prove after a relatively quiet 2021.

FIFA Ranking: 3

Spain

Another team not involved during last year’s Olympic Games was Spain. Yet, the team still had a very productive year. In 2021, Spain competed in 12 international matches and claimed victory in every one of them. They even avoided conceding a single goal.

FIFA Ranking: 9
