Nathan Redmond has previously been linked with a return to Birmingham City
Nathan Redmond has been tipped for a move to Birmingham City this summer amid uncertainty over his Burnley future.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, David Prutton claimed that a return to the club could be a good next step in the winger’s career.
He said: “Nathan Redmond and Birmingham City, that sounds like a good fit, doesn't it? The experience of Nathan, the clubs that he has played for, the ability to handle the pressure that will come with playing for Birmingham with how they have been in League One.”
Redmond has struggled for game time at Burnley since joining the club in 2023, and has barely played a role in Scott Parker’s side this season.
However, he was linked with a move to the Blues during the January transfer window, and a return to the club where he began his career could be one last stop before he ends his playing days.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see what Redmond’s weekly salary at Burnley is, in case a move to Birmingham is on the cards.
Redmond joined Burnley in the summer of 2023 following the Clarets’ promotion to the Premier League.
He arrived after a stint with Besiktas, signing a two-year deal that is now set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
The 31-year-old’s deal is valued at £35,000 per week, making him one of the best paid players in the Burnley squad.
Redmond is one of the most experienced players in the Turf Moor dressing room, having spent the last decade or so competing in the Premier League with the likes of Norwich City and Southampton.
Throughout his career, he’s played 276 times in the Premier League, scoring 28 times and earning a career-best eighth-place finish during the 2016/17 season with Southampton.
Redmond was also a part of the Canaries’ third-place finish in the 2014/15 Championship campaign, helping the club gain promotion, which is invaluable experience to bring to Parker’s side this year as they chase a place in the Premier League.
The best paid player in the Burnley squad is captain Josh Brownhill, with the midfielder earning £45,000 per week.
Given Birmingham will be aiming to compete at a high level in the Championship straight away, these are the kinds of figures that the club may have to pay in order to fight for promotion to the top flight in the long run.
Josh Cullen is the Clarets’ second-best paid player, with the Irishman receiving £40,000-a-week, while Joe Worrall earns £35,000 per week.
However, while Birmingham may need to increase their level of spending on wages in order to compete at the top of the Championship, it’s unlikely they will want to offer Redmond a salary at that cost given how little he’s played in the last two years.
A reduction on his £35,000 per week deal is likely wherever he ends up, and a return to Birmingham could be a good bookend to his playing career, as Prutton suggests.
