Birmingham City are closing in on a deal to bring Demarai Gray back to the club, and it could impact Emil Hansson and Scott Wright.
Birmingham City are interested in a deal for former player Demarai Gray as they look to strengthen Chris Davies’ squad on their Championship return.
The 28-year-old is currently playing in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq, but it has been reported that a return to St. Andrew’s is on the cards for the winger.
If it is finalised, this would be an exciting signing for several reasons from Blues’ perspective. Firstly, Gray is a quality player, having played Premier League football over the years, and his pace, direct style and technical ability would make him a real threat in the Championship.
As well as that, Blues have a place in Gray’s heart, as that is where his journey as a professional started.
Birmingham were a different club back then, and there will be a feeling of unfinished business for the winger, as he left after just 18 months of consistent games in a royal blue shirt.
Of course, the fans would also love to see Gray return, as there is always a special connection with those that have come through the ranks.
Whilst the signing of Gray would be a statement of intent, here we look at TWO players who may be frustrated by his potential arrival…
There was a lot of excitement when Blues signed Hansson from Heracles, as he had arrived with top-flight experience in the Eredivisie, and there was an expectation he would be a key figure for Davies’ side.
Whilst he certainly made a contribution, the 27-year-old managed just one league goal as Blues won the title, and he didn’t always get a place in the XI, with injuries not helping either.
It would be foolish to write Hansson off, as players can take time to adapt, and it’s clear he has talent, but, make no mistake, Gray would arrive ahead of him in the pecking order.
The Swede will need a big pre-season if he wants more minutes moving forward, especially as it would be no surprise if another winger followed Gray through the door.
Another to arrive at Blues 12 months ago, Wright had struggled to get the game time he would’ve wanted, as he was restricted to just 13 league appearances before suffering a serious knee injury in February.
The immediate focus for the player will be on his rehab, and that injury situation means Wright may be aware that he will have to be patient for many more opportunities with Birmingham.
But, securing a player like Gray will make the first-team feel a lot longer away for the ex-Rangers man, and it will dent his prospects of getting in the XI moving forward.
