Alfie Doughty is on his way from Luton Town to Millwall, and with agreement reached between the clubs, here's how much the Lions may have to pay him.

It now seems that Luton Town's Alfie Doughty is set to leave Kenilworth Road for Millwall, and this is how much the Lions may have to pay him while he's there.

Two successive relegations from the Premier League to League One have hit Luton Town hard, and one of the biggest costs of such a fall is the drain of players away from the club who wish to remain playing at a higher level.

Alfie Doughty has been a solid player for Luton since his arrival at the club from Stoke City in 2022. He's made almost 100 League appearances for the Hatters over those three seasons, and missed only one of their 38 Premier League matches throughout the 2023-24 season.

But Luton's relegation from the Championship at the end of last season fuelled speculation that Doughty could be on his way out of Kenilworth Road, and it's now reported that he'll be joining Millwall, and staying in the second tier next season.

Doughty would become one of Millwall's highest-paid players, if they match his Luton wage

Details of the agreement reached between Luton and Millwall over Doughty's transfer remain unknown, but his wages at Luton give us an indication of what the Lions could be paying to secure his services.

Capology estimate that Doughty was on £27,500-a-week at Kenilworth Road, making him Luton's fourth-highest earner.

If those wages are to be matched by Millwall, he would be the third-highest earner at the club after Japhet Tanganga and Joe Bryan, and well ahead of their current third-highest earner Luke Cundle, who's estimated to be on £15,000-a-week.

Tanganga sale would free up wages, but Millwall want to keep him

If Millwall are to pay Doughty what he was on at Luton, he would be one of their highest-earning players. And this does raise a question regarding the player at the top of Millwall's highest-earners list. Japhet Tanganga is an extremely highly-rated player, and there have been rumours circulating all summer that he could be on his way out of The Den.

Sky Sports News reported last week that Millwall had rejected an offer of £2.6 million from Verona for the defender. Tanganga has a release clause in his contract set at £1.2 million, but the journalist Richard Cawley has reported that it's believed this clause applies only to Premier League clubs.

Freeing up the £35,000-a-week that they've been Tanganga would allow Millwall to onboard Doughty and still be saving money, were they to match the £27,500-a-week that he's been on at Luton, but it seems - for the time being - that the Lions want to keep Tanganga at the club.

The win-win situation would be for Millwall to keep Tanganga for next season, with Doughty also in their team. With an estimated annual wage of just over £1.4 million a year he might not come cheap. But having finished the 2024-25 season just two points short of a play-off place for a spot in the Premier League, his new club may well think it would be a gamble worth taking.
