Manchester City’s number 10 Jack Grealish has signed a brand new long-term deal with sportswear giants Puma, it was announced this week.
The former Aston Villa captain and current England international star had been a long-standing target of Manchester City’s kit manufacturers, despite interest from Nike in retaining their now-former client.
It was reported back in January that the £100 million man had been subject to a potential record-breaking deal with Puma for a British player, while sources from the side of Nike stressed that they were still holding talks with Grealish.
However, now following confirmation on Monday morning, Jack Grealish is now a Puma athlete and will don their clothing, footwear, and products on a regular basis over the course of his contract.
Upon the release of the news this week Jack Grealish said, “For me Puma felt like a perfect fit. They have an amazing history in football and have worked with some of the world’s greatest players.
“I am delighted to join the family and to be a Puma FUTURE athlete. I am at home on the pitch and want to express myself, which is something I like about the brand, they do things differently and have a great outlook on football.
Grealish continued, “Puma are more than just a sports brand; they play a huge role in culture. My focus is always football, but I love fashion and style, so there are many exciting projects we plan to work on together on the pitch and beyond it.”
But just how much is Jack Grealish’s ‘record-breaking’ deal worth?
According to the information of the Mail’s Jack Gaughan, Grealish has signed the most lucrative boot contract ever handed to a British footballer, with Nike sources believing that the City forward has penned a deal worth around £10 million a season for five years at Puma.
It has been further reported that Nike were ‘unwilling to match the finances on offer’ to Jack Grealish and have a larger roster of athletes, with Puma able to offer ‘a more bespoke branding package’ to the 27 year-old.
Despite Nike having the larger collection of athletes under their name, Puma have an extensive list themselves, as well as boasting an agreement with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola – who is often seen sporting Puma garments on the Etihad Stadium touchline.
Jack Grealish has joined the likes of Neymar, Thiago Silva, Kyle Walker, Antoine Griezmann, David Silva, and Oleksandr Zinchenko at Puma, in a deal that is only set to benefit his football activities as well as his relationship with Manchester City – while the Premier League champions’ agreement with Puma remains in tact.
