It was always going to between Nick Woltemade and Harvey Elliott. The duo have been the standout players in their respective country’s success to reach the U21 final. In the end, Elliott wins the Player of the Tournament as he scored his fifth of the tournament for England’s opener in a 3-2 success.
However, Woltemade still went home with an individual accolade as he finished top-scorer with six goals. England are the only team the Stuttgart player failed to score against in this tournament. He was rested for the group stage fixture against Lee Carsley’s team ten days ago.
Meanwhile, Bayern will now be expected to accelerate their efforts to sign Woltemade. The striker has been publicly linked with the Bavarians since the semi-final win against France, which would clearly upset Antonio Di Salvo as the story dominated German media ahead of the big final.
England U21 captain James McAtee and Elliott were linked with Bayer Leverkusen at the start of this summer's transfer window before the Bundesliga side focused on other targets. Die Werkself will still be expected to get a player from the U21 champions as Jarell Quansah's move reached the final stages.
