The 26-year-old has been outstanding for the Lions since he initially joined on loan in January 2024, so it’s no surprise that he has attracted interest, with Wolves and Sheffield United having been linked with Tanganga in January.

Whilst the ex-Spurs man remained at The Den for the remainder of last season, a summer departure has been discussed, with a host of clubs tracking Tanganga.

Verona fail with £2.6m offer for Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga

And, it appears Verona have made the first move to sign Tanganga, with Sky Sports Transfer Centre (13:23) revealing that the Serie A side made a bid of £2.6m for the player, which was rejected by Millwall.

Tanganga’s situation is complicated by a release clause in his contract of around £1.2m, but that only applies to Premier League clubs, which is why Millwall were able to turn down Verona’s offer, even though it exceeded that sum.

The report adds that Verona were ready to offer Tanganga a four-year contract, in what would have been his first taste of Italian football.

Millwall face a battle to keep Japhet Tanganga due to release clause

The release clause has presented Millwall with a real problem this summer, although you can’t blame the club, as it was obviously needed to get him to sign in the first place.

Nevertheless, it means they are vulnerable to losing their star man in this window, and some will question whether they should’ve tried to rush this deal through at £2.6m, as they know there is a very real chance that he will leave for around half that price if a top-flight English club comes in.

But, Tanganga’s true value does exceed £2.6m when you consider his performances, so it does make sense that they have rejected this offer.

Plus, the main aim for Millwall will be to win promotion, and they know that their chances decrease significantly if Tanganga does depart, so the fans will like to see that the club are fighting to keep him, given his quality and influence on the team.
