Millwall are reportedly closing in on the signings of Fulham goalkeeper Steven Benda and former Ipswich Town midfielder Massimo Luongo.
Millwall are reportedly closing in on the signing of Fulham goalkeeper Steven Benda, while former Ipswich Town midfielder Massimo Luongo is also set to join the club after a successful trial period.
That's according to The Mirror journalist Dan Marsh, who claims that Benda is undergoing a medical with Millwall ahead of a loan move from Fulham, and he will follow Luongo in making the move to The Den.
After a significant upturn in form following the arrival of Alex Neil in December, the Lions surged up the Championship table in the second half of last season, but they missed out on the play-offs on the final day of the campaign, eventually finishing in eighth place.
As Neil begins work on rebuilding his squad, Millwall have made three new signings so far this summer, with goalkeeper Max Crocombe arriving from Burton Albion, while defender Zak Sturge and striker Josh Coburn have completed permanent moves from Chelsea and Middlesbrough respectively after loan spells at the club last season, with the latter joining in a deal worth up to £5 million.
However, it appears the Lions are far from done in the transfer market, and Benda and Luongo look set to become the club's next two new additions.
After beginning his career in his native Germany, Benda made the move to Swansea City in the summer of 2017, but he made just 31 appearances for the club during a six-year stint in South Wales, and he spent time out on loan with Swindon Town and Peterborough United.
Despite his lack of game time with the Swans, Benda joined Premier League side Fulham in August 2023, but he has featured just four times for the Cottagers over the past two years, with all of those appearances coming in cup competitions.
As he undergoes a medical ahead of his loan move to Millwall, Benda will be hoping to receive more regular game time at The Den, but he will face competition for places from fellow new signing Crocombe and existing first-choice goalkeeper Lukas Jensen.
Luongo helped Ipswich to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League in his first two full seasons at Portman Road, but his minutes were limited in the top flight last season, with the 32-year-old making just 15 appearances.
It was, therefore, little surprise when Luongo was released by the Tractor Boys at the end of his contract this summer, but manager Kieran McKenna was full of praise for the Australian, describing him as "the best free signing in football history".
Luongo has been on trial with Millwall during pre-season after leaving Ipswich, and after featuring in friendlies against Northampton Town and Elche, he is set to be offered a contract by the Lions and a medical is taking place.
Millwall were in need of a new goalkeeper this summer after Liam Roberts was released at the end of his contract, but it was assumed that Crocombe would be the man to provide back-up to Jensen next season after his move from Burton.
However, with Benda set to bolster the Lions' goalkeeping ranks even further, it will be intriguing to see who Neil selects as his number one in the upcoming campaign, particularly as the German is unlikely to have agreed to make the switch to The Den without guarantees of game time.
After losing George Saville and George Honeyman this summer, Luongo will add some much-needed experience to Millwall's midfield, and having won promotion with Ipswich in his previous season in the Championship, he could prove to be an incredibly shrewd addition.
