With a two-goal advantage and overwhelming home support at the Montjuic stadium, Barcelona were in pole position to overcome PSG. However, highly avoidable lapses in concentration ultimately led to Barça’s downfall.

Ronald Araujo’s fateful red card in the 29th minute of the game was one of the defining moments of the game, as Barcelona lost all semblance of cohesion after going a man down.

With Barça unable to turn the tides around, Xavi was another victim of the rising tensions. He angrily protested against the referee from the sidelines and earned a red card for his antics in the second half.

Duration of the pair’s suspension

According to Mundo Deportivo Araujo’s penalty is expected to be a one or two-match suspension.

Meanwhile, Xavi’s punishment could range from one to three matches. Considering Xavi not only lashed out at the referee during the game but went back to the field and challenged him after the whistle had blown, his punishment might end up being harsher.

The Catalans will not have to worry about losing the duo in the immediate future, as they have already been knocked out of the 2023/2024 Champions League season.

However, the report states that the sanctions will be implemented next season at the start of the tournament.

It must be remembered, though, that Xavi’s future is unlikely to lie in Barcelona as, barring extraordinary circumstances, he will hit the exit door on June 30.

An opportunity to make amends in El Clasico

The defeat has struck Barcelona at an immensely inopportune time, with games yet to be played in La Liga.

Although the Blaugranes trail behind Real Madrid by eight points, the upcoming Clasico provides the team the perfect chance to turn over a new leaf and present a late title charge.

Araujo and Xavi will especially be aiming to be in the referee’s good books this time given how Barcelona faltered after their absence against PSG.
