Over the past few days, there has been increasing speculation about Barcelona signing Argentine midfielder Guido Rodriguez in the summer.

The Real Betis midfielder is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and is on the agenda of the Catalan heavyweights.

In fact, in some circles, it is even being suggested that the World Cup winner is all set to join the Blaugrana with the deal allegedly in its final phase.

Guido could renew with Real Betis

However, now, MARCA has brought forward a report which suggests that the deal is not as advanced as it is being advertised.

As per the update, Barcelona are indeed strongly interested in signing Rodriguez, largely because he would come for free in the summer.

Furthermore, there have been initial negotiations between the two parties that have gone favourable.

Now, Rodriguez is waiting for the ‘final call’ from Barcelona to confirm their intentions to sign him. Should the final call does not arrive soon enough, there is a chance that the 30-year-old will sign a new deal with Betis.

Los Verdiblancos have been pushing the Argentine to sign a new contract for some time now and have even put forth an offer on the table.

Thus, if there is no final step from Barcelona, Rodriguez would then renew his deal with Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

What if Rodriguez arrives?

If Barcelona are successful in signing Rodriguez, it does not mean that they will abandon their pursuit of another pivot midfielder.

Finances permitting, they intend to go after another top pivot, with the names of Amadou Onana, Joshua Kimmich, and Martin Zubimendi still very much on the agenda of Xavi and Barcelona.
