Derby County had a hectic summer as off-field issues prevented Wayne Rooney from strengthening the squad in the way he wanted.

As well as that, he saw many first-team players depart, including Jack Marriott. The striker was brought from Peterborough United in 2018 and was expected to be a key player for the Rams.

However, for various reasons, things didn’t work out and a contract problem meant he was available to leave on a free this summer, with Marriott returning to The Posh.

With Derby having netted just ten times in 14 games this season, scoring goals has been a problem but things haven’t worked out for Marriott either.

The 27-year-old had featured six times for the Championship outfit, with one goal, before he suffered a serious hamstring injury late on in a defeat at Reading in mid-September.

Darren Ferguson would describe the injury as a ‘real bad one’, with Marriott expected to be out for five months, so he still has plenty of time on the sidelines.

Unfortunately for the former Luton striker, fitness problems have impacted him at different points of his career, with Marriott’s loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last year disrupted.

So, as it turns out, losing Marriott hasn’t been a major problem for Derby despite their goalscoring problems. But, there will be a hope at Peterborough that he can return for the run-in, so he may still have a say as the season progresses, with the two clubs looking as though they will both be fighting for survival.
