Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has revealed that Ian Poveda will not be available for the trip to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, although he hasn’t ruled the winger out for the rest of the season just yet.

The Colombian international joined the Owls in the January window on loan from Leeds United, having failed to get the regular football that he wanted at Elland Road.

And, Poveda enjoyed a brilliant start to life with Wednesday, as they won five of the first six games that he started for the club, which has been key to giving the Yorkshire side a fighting chance to stay up with three games to go.

However, the attacker picked up an injury in the 6-0 defeat at Ipswich, and whilst he made two substitute appearances shortly after, it was clear Poveda wasn’t fit due to the muscle problem.

The club have been waiting for more information on the issue, with Poveda not involved in the last two games, and Rohl told the club’s media that he won’t have the 24-year-old, or centre-back Di’Shon Bernard available at Ewood Park, but they could feature before the season is over.

We have nearly the same squad available. Nobody comes back at the moment, but we have two days before the game to go. Hopefully Di'Shon and Ian are back before the end of the season, this would be helpful, but my focus is with the players that are available.”

Ian Poveda brings quality to Sheffield Wednesday’s attack

There’s no denying that this is a massive setback for Wednesday, because Poveda is a player with real quality.

To bring him in from Leeds in January was a shrewd bit of business by the Owls, and you have to credit the player for how quickly he adapted to his new club.

With the exception of Barry Bannan, you do feel that Wednesday sometimes lack that technical player when it comes to building up the play, so Poveda’s close control and the way he could pick a pass and beat his opponent made him a constant threat.

But, Wednesday have picked up results without Poveda, and they’re by no means a one-man team, so Rohl will have faith that the current group can get enough points on the board.

Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation battle

You just have to look at the table to see the importance of Sunday’s game at Blackburn, as Wednesday are running out of games as they try to climb out of the bottom three, and beating Rovers could drag them back into the mix.

We’re at the stage of the campaign where it’s just about winning, and Rohl will feel his team are capable of getting all three points, but he will also be aware of the quality that Blackburn have, with Sammie Szmodics the obvious threat as he continues his outstanding individual season.
