FC Bayern is not only behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table, the Werkself also has a lot to offer Bayern in terms of play – at least according to Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, who has even recognised better football at VfB Stuttgart.

„I respect other clubs where they do a great job. And we simply have to admit one thing: Leverkusen and Stuttgart, in particular, have done an excellent job this year and some of their football is better than ours and we have to accept that,“ said Hoeneß. The honorary president, who is also a member of the FCB supervisory board, was a guest at the Munich brokerage fair, where he answered the questions of numerous insurance representatives.

Uli Hoeneß: The boys are fired up for the coming season

However, the 72-year-old also derives some positives from the aforementioned criticism. „But you can also draw strength from it again, because if you become German champions ten or eleven times, then the championship is a given,“ Hoeneß admits openly. „If we don’t become German champions this year, how fired up do you think our boys will be on 1 July to show everyone again next year,“ Hoeneß surmises.

Champions League victory? „A bomb“

Is the season already over in view of the strong competition? Hoeneß doesn’t want to know. „The season is only just beginning,“ says Hoeneß, formulating the team’s ambition, which should now be to win the Champions League. „If we don’t become German champions and have the chance to perhaps reach the final of the Champions League, that would be the ultimate. If we were sitting here again in a year’s time and had won the Champions League, then I would say: that’s a bombshell, to win this title in a difficult year in which a lot of things didn’t go well,“ said Hoeneß, who is now focussing on defending second place in the table and then on the game against Arsenal in particular.
