The San Jose Earthquakes have taken the first big step towards turning their season around after a lousy start to the campaign by downing LAFC 3-1 Saturday afternoon, though they still sit bottom of the Western Conference.
But perhaps the most notable moment of the all-California clash came when 23-year-old Hernán López came off of the San Jose bench to make his debut for the club.
The Argentine joined the Quakes for a reported club-record fee of $7 million late last week and his inclusion in the matchday squad came as a shock.
“I didn’t know I was going to play but once I found out I was ready," López said. "I was a little nervous, I’m not going to lie, but I took it in stride. I was prepared for it and excited to show what I’ve got.”
Luchi Gonzalez's side scored two goals in 13 minutes after López joined the fray.
Up next for San Jose is a US Open Cup showdown with fellow Bay Area club Oakland Roots in the round of 32.
