Bayern Munich’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić has said that Matthijs de Ligt was a long-term “dream target” for the club.

The Netherlands defender arrived from Juventus this summer in a €60m deal.

Speaking to Sky90 about the negotiations, Salihamidžić claimed it was an easy deal to conclude with the player.

“We explained everything to him and talked about the project, and before we even discussed a single number he said he just wanted to join us,” the 45-year-old said.

“All the new signings could have earned more at other clubs but decided to join us.”

It was put to Salihamidžić that it would have made more financial sense to meet Niklas Süle’s salary demands rather than pay big money to acquire 22-year-old de Ligt.

Süle joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer this summer, indicating afterwards that he didn’t get the respect he felt he deserved in Bavaria.

In response, Salihamidžić said: “I can only say that Matthijs was our absolute dream target – actually for years.

“I think Bayern was also his dream club for years. He fits us like a glove.”

De Ligt made his Bundesliga debut on Friday night, replacing Lucas Hernández late on in Die Roten’s 6-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt.
