In the last few seasons, FC Barcelona have nailed their free-agent centre-back signings with the players turning out to be resounding successes. Andreas Christensen was reliable during his first two seasons at the club while Inigo Martinez has been one of the best in the world so far this season.

However, Christensen has really struggled so far this season under Hansi Flick with injury issue after injury issue. The Dane played only the campaign opener against Valencia and has since then been miss through successive injuries.

The ex-Chelsea defender returned once only to suffer a soleus muscle issue which kept him out for another month. He recently returned to training and would have been hoping to make the squad list after receiving the medical green light earlier this week.

However, in what has been a cruel twist of fate, Hansi Flick has confirmed in his press conference today that Christensen has suffered yet another relapse of the same soleus muscle issue and is set to be out for 3-4 weeks, as per Javi Miguel on X (formerly Twitter).

It must be very difficult being Christensen at the moment. He will be keen to return as soon as possible to help Hansi Flick out but the longer this injury saga continues for him, the lesser the chances of him featuring again this season.

Unfortunately for the Dane, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo have all surpassed him in the pecking order but one would have to say that Christensen has all the attributes Hansi Flick will want from his center-back.

It is sometimes easy to forget that Christensen is just 28 years old. He has been injured for almost the entire campaign at a time when he should actually be in his prime years as footballer and that is a shame in every sense.

One would only hope that this is the last that Christensen is suffering from this injury and that he makes a full recovery very soon. Having the Dane in the squad is invaluable experience for Hansi Flick and let’s wait and see how it plays out going forward.
